Stephen works with people seeking new dimensions of identity, creativity, desire or something not yet named. He brings respect and attention to each moment, where his aim as a psychoanalytic therapist is to listen to his clients’ life in an unheard way, to help open a space for irrevocable transformation. His background as an artist and meditation teacher gently informs his approach to analysis – how he listen to your speech and your silences, the details of your anguish and dreams that you will explore.
Stephen specializes in working with loss, life-transition and blocks to creativity. He has a history of working with high-achieving creatives to reach new depths in their work and vision.
Stephen is a clinician at the Free Association Clinic for Existential Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in San Francisco and at RAMS Child, Youth and Family Clinic where he specializes in integrating psychoanalytic approaches to play therapy with children and with teens to explore crises of identity. Stephen is in formation with Lacan School of Psychoanalysis and is a member of the “Freud Research Group”of the International Society of Psychoanalysis and Philosophy. He received a Scholar Award (2022) from the Psychoanalytic Division of APA. From 2020-24 served as a co-editor of The European Journal of Psychoanalysis. His writings around psychoanalysis are published in: Vestigia, European Journal of Psychoanalysis, DIVISION/Review and Critica. He sometimes leads workshops at Esalen Institute in Big Sur at the intersection of art and awareness praxes.
Psychotherapy means to discover new facets of yourself through and with speaking to an other person. This experience is at its richest when both therapist and patient are fully present for this encounter. A core dimension of being present in therapy is the fact that we have physical bodies. Bodies can be delightful, uncomfortable, unruly and precarious. All of this is integral part of what needs to be spoken in therapy, a part of what cannot be avoided.
